Celebrities who have endorsed either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump

Taylor Swift formally announced her plan to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November in the form of an Instagram post on Tuesday night, shortly after the conclusion of the presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The post, a photo of Swift with her cat Benjamin Button from her TIME Magazine Person of the Year photoshoot, is accompanied by a caption that reads, “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”

Swift goes on to attribute her statement and transparency to artificial intelligence-generated images that alluded to Taylor Swift and Swifties’ support for Trump’s campaign.

Trump reposted these AI-generated images to his social media platform Truth Social in August.

In her statement on Instagram, Swift says that the AI images “really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation.” She says that these images led her to conclude that she needs to be “very transparent” about her plans saying, “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” said Swift. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

She continues, “I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

Swift concludes her statement, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.”

This post is Swift’s first public endorsement for Harris.

After years of keeping mostly quiet in regard to politics, Swift made her stance clear in 2018, when she publicly endorsed democratic U.S. Senate candidate Phil Bredesen of Tennessee. She gave fans and viewers further insight into her choice to endorse Bredesen in her 2020 Netflix documentary “Miss Americana.”

Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn ultimately won the seat over Bredesen.

The news of Swift’s support for Bredesen at the time brought Trump to say that he “liked Swift’s music about 25% less now.”

After the debate on Tuesday night, Trump was asked about Swift’s newest statement to which he responded, “I have no idea.”

At the end of the caption, Swift signed the post, “With love and hope, Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,” referencing a comment that was made by Trump’s VP pick Sen. JD Vance of Ohio who previously labeled women without biological children “childless cat ladies” who don’t really have a “direct stake” in America.

Continuing the “cat lady chain” as one Instagram commenter called it is actress Aubrey Plaza, who posted a photo of her and her cat on Instagram Wednesday morning with the caption, “HARRIS us WALZ.”

Swift’s post has been met with millions of likes which include several celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Selena Gomez, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Aniston and more.
